Lesson plans and activities
The lesson plans that were localized cover the areas “Audience, Academic Style and Vocabulary Shift” (Lesson Plan 1), “Writing General-Specific Texts” (Lesson Plan 2), “Writing Definitions” (Lesson Plan 3); in addition an activity for the curriculum area “Writing Summaries” was created. The lesson plans and activity accompany Swales & Feak's textbook "Academic Writing for Graduate Students" (2004). A semester activity, “Local Word of the Week” was developed that, following a practice situated in critical pedagogy, allows the students to become teachers in the classrooms. Lesson Plan 1 focuses on raising awareness between different registers, showing that local language can appear in highly academic contexts (admission emails, the discussion of a research project on UH website). In Lesson Plan 2, students learn about the origins of Pidgin and become acquainted with “the historical and cultural context of the world outside the classroom” (Sullivan, 2000). This material was chosen to encourage learners’ understanding of English as a pluricentric language and its application as a lingua franca in Hawaii’s history. In Lesson Plan 3, students are encouraged to read critically in the world around them as they add Pidgin words to their vocabulary and learn about cultural differences in the concepts that underlie certain local words.
